Long steel prices in the Caribbean nation of Dominican Republic, SteelOrbis learns, have remained mostly stable since last month.

Prices for rebar in the Dominican Republic's domestic market remain at approximately 34,000 Dominican pesos/mt or about US$945/mt, including taxes and delivery. Distributors say prices are high compared to other markets because the country has only two rebar producers, which are able to effectively set the price. The market is also virtually insulated from imports, which are taxed highly, thus creating a favorable market situation for domestic manufacturers.

On the demand side, conditions in the Dominican longs market are continuing to improve slightly, along with the local construction market. However, overall, longs prices in the Dominican Republic have remained largely unchanged from mid-August through the end of September.
