During the week ending September 26, Chinese domestic semi-finished steel prices have declined, while transaction activity in the market has been at low levels. Average prices of steel billet and slab in the local Chinese market are presented in the following table.
During the given week, some rolling mills in China have continued to suspend production, weakening demand for semi-finished steel. With prices indicating sharp decreases, downstream steelmakers have gradually started to conclude purchases as their inventories of semi-finished steel are at low levels. However, restocking volumes have not been very large, providing insufficient support for semi-finished steel prices. Meanwhile, ferrous metals futures prices have declined, exerting a negative impact on the semi-finished steel market. It is thought that semi-finished steel prices in the Chinese domestic market will continue to decline in the coming week.
