Brazil imported 44,000 mt of rebar in August, 37 percent more than in July, according to the country’s ministry of development, industry and foreign trade MDIC.

Most of the tonnage came from Turkey, 42,300 mt, 52 percent more than in July and the highest volume since November 2013, while the balance 1,700 mt came from Taiwan, against a non-relevant tonnage in July.

The average FOB import price of Turkish rebar was $597/mt in August, 2 percent less than in July, while Taiwanese rebar was imported at $602/mt.

A mid-sized contractor in Rio de Janeiro said that it has recently bought 16mm rebar at BRL2,950/mt ($1,268/mt) and the 6.3mm product at BRL3,110/mt ($1,336/mt), both CFR at the client’s premises.

In the case of the 6.3mm rebar, the price compares to BRL3,190/mt in a deal closed less than one month ago.

A source from Sinobras, a producer in the north of Brazil, told SteelOrbis that they are selling the CA-50 grade 50mm diameter at BRL2,520/mt ($1,078/mt), CFR client’s premises in the southeastern region, comparable to BRL2,560/mt ($1,122/mt) three weeks ago.
