During the week ending July 12, Chinese domestic semi-finished steel prices have indicated a slight downtrend, while transaction activity in the overall market has been slacker than in the previous week and is now at low levels. Average prices of steel billet and slab in the local Chinese market are presented in the table below.
During the given week, floods in the middle and lower reaches of the Changjiang River have exerted a negative impact on the domestic semi-finished steel market, resulting in slacker transaction activity in central and southern China, dragging down transaction activity in the overall market and thereby negatively affecting semi-finished steel prices. However, recently ferrous metal futures prices have increased and this is expected to provide some support for semi-finished steel prices. It is thought that semi-finished steel prices in the Chinese market will likely switch to a rising trend in the coming week.
