The US import hot dipped galvanized (HDG) and Galvalume markets have been trending quietly since the AD/ CVD trade case petitions have been announced, but previously booked tons continue to arrive at US ports. According US steel import license data, US import tonnages of hot dipped galvanized sheets and strip for April, May and June (263,370 mt, 308,778 mt and 258,149 mt, respectively) are among the highest reported since May of 2014. Chinese tons tapered drastically from May to June (122,705 mt to 56,013 mt), although US import tons from India increased from 22,233 mt in May to 37,730 mt in June.
“The trade case will definitely help, but the market is still oversaturated,” according to one trader source. “A lot of us are talking to offshore mill reps to see what else is out there once we need to order tons but the market is mostly quiet.”
