Although the current spot price transaction range for US domestic hot dipped galvanized (HDG) coil has remained steady since our last report a week ago, at $41-$42 cwt. ($904-$926/mt or $820-$840/nt) ex-Midwest mill, some believe that last week’s price increase announcements could nudge spot market prices up by $1.00 cwt. ($22/mt or $20/nt).
AMUSA last week announced they had opened their order books for August production and shipments, adding they would be increasing base prices by a minimum of $20/nt. NLMK USA also announced they would be raising prices, indicating a $30/nt increase would be implemented on all new spot market orders.
“Hot rolled and cold rolled pricing already seems to be showing some signs of flexibility but that’s definitely not the case for coated,” one Texas-based source said, adding that while some believe last weeks’ flat rolled price increase announcements was an attempt to establish a floor for US domestic HRC and CRC pricing, that some believe the announcement could push HDG prices upward due to strength in the market. At current, US HDG ex-mill lead times are trending at approximately eight to nine weeks.
