Buyers and sellers of US import hot dipped galvanized (HDG) and Galvalume coil have said that market activity is teetering to a halt, as the results of the Section 232 investigation have yet to be announced.
Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross initially indicated the report would be finished by the end of June; that deadline has since been delayed twice. The first pushback came so the Pentagon could evaluate the impacts of steel tariffs on national security; critics have pointed out that the US military is not reliant on imported steel.
The second delay was due to the G20 summit; White House officials indicated they would delay announcing the results of the 232 investigation until after President Trump had the chance to meet with global leaders.
And while White House officials continue to hint that hefty tariffs are on the horizon, at current, the US steel market as a whole is stuck on pause.
