Last week, US domestic flat rolled steel mills announced a fourth price increase; since that time, the most commonly heard spot price transaction range for US domestic, base-price hot dipped galvanized (HDG) coil has firmed by $1.00 cwt. on the bottom end. This brings the current average spot market price transaction range to $38-$39 cwt. ($838-$860/mt or $760-$780/nt), ex-Midwest mill.
Spot market prices for other grades, such as 0.012”x40.875” G30, 0.019”x48” G90 and Galvalume coil have firmed as well.
US domestic scrap prices are forecast to rise $25-30/mt across all grades during the December buy cycle; mills in the South believe that scrap price will firm $30-$40/mt. Should scrap prices firm by the anticipated levels, it’s believed that US domestic HDG coil prices will continue to firm as well.
