The most commonly reported spot market price transaction range for US domestic hot dipped galvanized (HDG) and Galvalume coil has slipped since our last report a week ago, as sources close to SteelOrbis report that mills have become increasingly willing to negotiate price with volume-sized buyers as a means of filling their order books.
Smaller-sized buyers “are still paying over $40 cwt,” the source said. ($882/mt or $800/nt)
Speculation that a post-Labor Day price increase announcement could be in the works continues to run rampant, although it’s not believed that current market conditions would support higher prices.
“Demand is OK but it’s hardly through the roof,” another source said. “When you combine that with soft prices you have a lot of buyers who are stepping to the sidelines until there’s a clearer picture of what’s going on with the market.”
