As deals have become increasingly widespread, US domestic spot prices for coated flat steel products fell drastically in the last week. Domestic hot dipped galvanized (HDG) and Galvalume buying activity has been extremely minimal, as expectations that spot prices are likely to keep falling in the coming weeks has most buyers delaying or even entirely avoiding purchases. As a result, HDG and Galvalume base spot prices have fallen about 1.00 cwt. ($22/mt or $20/nt) over the past week to $36.00-$37.00 cwt. ($794-$816/mt or $720-$740/nt) ex-Midwest mill.
Meanwhile, spot prices for certain coated products have fallen more substantially, and sources tell SteelOrbis that some mills don't have a set asking price at the moment, and "prices are transactional," being negotiated with each individual order. In the case of HDG 0.019"x48" G90, spot prices are down $2.00 cwt. ($44/mt or $40/nt) since last week and are now between $46.00-$47.00 cwt. ($1,014-$1,036/mt or $920-$940/nt) ex-Midwest mill, as mills have been actively seeking orders. Galvalume 0.019x41.5625 Gr80/AZ55 spots declined $1.00 cwt. in the last seven days due largely to high inventories and oversupply pressuring prices lower.
