An influx of imports, declining raw materials costs and the slow start of the “end of year slowdown” are all taking a toll on US domestic hot dipped galvanized prices, as a $0.50 cwt. ($11/mt or $10/nt) price softening has taken place nearly across the board. Today, the most commonly reported spot price transaction range for base price HDG has been revised to $35.50-$37.50 cwt. ($783-$827/mt or $710-$750/nt), ex-Midwest mill.
“Order activity isn’t terrible,” according to one Midwest-based service center source, “but scrap prices are falling, HRC prices are coming down and there’s a ton of imports that are arriving at the docks. It’s the trifecta.”
