The most commonly heard spot price transaction range for US domestic hot dipped galvanized (HDG) continues to trend at approximately $42.50-$43.50 cwt. ($937-$959/mt or $850-$870/nt), ex-mill, however, sources close to SteeOrbis report that volume buyers are able to book deals up to $1.00 cwt. ($22/mt or $20/nt) below the average range.
As with other flat rolled steel segments, buyers report a wariness in terms of doing any significant restocking at current price points, especially in light of the forecast downtrend for US scrap prices during the April buy-cycle.
“Scrap is set to come down, and we’re about to head into the summer months, which are traditionally a bit slower in terms of orders and bookings,” one source said. “I don’t think anyone sees the market crashing, but there’s some concern that there’s room for some price correction. Buyers in general are being cautious.”
