There was a lot of talk (and in some cases, outright laughter) about whether the recent $1.00 cwt. ($22/mt or $20/nt) price increase that was rolled out by some US flats mills would stick; now that spot market prices for coating extras are becoming increasingly flexible, many think it’s safe to say that announcement came and went without making any real waves in the marketplace. “All seems to be going well, weather permitting,” according to one Texas-based trader source. “And we’re all just marching like the ‘Walking Dead’ toward the end of the year.”
The most commonly reported spot price transaction range for base-price HDG may have held steady in the approximate range of $35.50-$37.50 cwt. ($783-$827/mt or $710-$750/nt) ex-Midwest mill, but anyone who is looking to book hefty tonnages can negotiate pretty big deals when it comes to coating extras.
