Orders, inquiries and overall activity within the US domestic hot dipped galvanized (HDG) coil market may be the strongest within the flats market segment, but falling raw materials costs have not left producers immune to revising their ex-mill pricing.
“This has nothing to do with supply and demand, overall things are pretty good,” according to one SteelOrbis source. But with US scrap prices having settled down substantially for the month of February, with additional downticks predicted for March, mills are in a better position to be flexible with pricing since their intake costs have been softening.
The most commonly reported spot price transaction range for US domestic HDG has ticked down by approximately $2.00 cwt. ($44/mt or $40/nt) since our last report a week ago, bringing the revised base price range to approximately $30.00-$32.00 cwt. ($661-$705/mt or $600-$640/nt), ex-Midwest mill. But as with last week, buyers who express an interest in booking significant tonnages will have the power position at the negotiation table.
