The US domestic hot dipped galvanized (HDG) and Galvalume market has been extremely quiet in the last week on account of the New Year holiday, with little movement in spot prices, with the exception of a $1.00 cwt. ($22/mt or $20/nt) bump on the low end on Galvalume base spot prices now in the range of $39.00-$40.00 cwt. ($860-$882/mt or $780-$800/nt) ex-Midwest mill.
While spot price ranges for other coated products have not moved in the last week, buyers are having difficulty booking orders on the low end of current prices; the lowest prices are expected to be gone by mid-January after the January scrap trend becomes apparent, according to market sources. Additionally, a boost in buying activity is anticipated in the next couple weeks as buyers lock-in current prices ahead of further increases anticipated throughout at least this month.
