During the week ending November 14, average prices of steel plate in the Chinese domestic market have continued their upward trend, while transaction activity in the overall market has been at low-to-medium levels. Average steel plate prices in China are presented in the table below
During the given week, major Chinese steelmaker Baosteel has raised its steel plate prices by RMB 300/mt ($44/mt) for December delivery, exerting a positive impact on the domestic steel plate market. Currently, inventory levels of steel plate in the market are at relatively low levels. Meanwhile, steelmakers in northern China have had to restrict their production due to environmental protection measures, resulting in reduced steel plate supply to the market, thereby also providing support for steel plate market prices. However, downstream users are unwilling to make purchases as they think prices are too high.
It is expected that steel plate prices in the Chinese domestic market will move sideways in the coming week at the current high levels, though the price trend will also depend on factors such as the movement of the futures market or whether some traders will seek to sell at lower prices to speed up sales activities and bring in cash.
