Brazilian shipyards are currently paying, CFR shipyard terms, the equivalent to $650/mt to $700/mt for locally produced shipbuilding grade plates in the 22mm to 34mm thickness range, a source from a major shipyard told SteelOrbis.

The source mentioned that such price range compares to $700/mt to $800/mt one month ago, reflecting the reduced domestic demand and lower international prices.

The source said that he is receiving offers from South Korea and China, also CFR terms, at $580/mt to $600/mt, against $600/mt to $700/mt one month ago.

According to the country’s ministry of development, industry and foreign trade, the Brazilian imports of plates increased more than six fold from September to 11,100 mt in October, reflecting chiefly an import of 9,600 mt of Austrian material, against no imports in September, at an average FOB price of $832/mt.
