New offshore players looking to gain foothold in US HRC import market

Activity and pricing within the US domestic hot rolled coil (HRC) market may still be trending sideways since our last report a week ago, at approximately $33.00-$34.00 cwt. ($727-$750/mt or $660-$680/nt) ex-Midwest mill, but sources say deals slightly below that range are available for customers placing significant order sizes. However, up-and-comers in the import market might soon start to put pressure on that price level for all customers.

Brazilian producers have been quite aggressive in pursuing US orders for the past several weeks, keeping their offer range flexible based on order size. Turkish offers, meanwhile, have remained steady in the last week, with little indication that they might adjust offers to keep up with their new Brazilian competition.
