Mexican HRC market optimistic about future demand amid price drops

Mexican HRC prices fell US$28/mt in the last two weeks to settle at US$506/mt ex-mill.

Sources are trying to remain optimistic about demand forecasts in the face of price downtrending across the board in the flat steel sector. Although industry sources expect growth in Mexico’s apparent steel consumption, with 2015 year-end levels on track to reach 27 million tons, many sources are still concerned about the disproportionate increase in import volumes.

Mexico’s national domestic consumption increased from 10.37 million tons in 2013 to 12.39 in 2014.
