In the Turkish domestic flats market, domestic standard quality sheet prices have shown certain decreases due to the price drops seen in overseas markets and the low demand in the local market.
The activity in sectors which use large quantities of cold rolled materials; i.e., automotive, white goods and heating, has been at high levels as compared to other sectors both in the Turkish and global markets. Thus, the decrease margin observed in CRC prices has been lower than for HRC prices.
Despite the local price decreases, no signs of a recovery have been observed in demand levels in the Turkish domestic market. After all, according to the data from the Turkish Board of Exporters (TIM), Turkish exports in September amounted to $8,388 million, with a decrease of 30.53 percent as compared to the corresponding period of 2008. Announcing the latest export figures, Mehmet Büyükekşi, president of TIM, stated that Turkey's exports in September dropped to $68.397 billion, down 32.6 percent over the first nine months of the current year. For the past twelve months up to and including September, Turkey's exports have decreased by 28.9 percent year on year to $94.283 billion. It is hard to talk about a recovery in demand when such a decrease is in question.
