Diverse trends in local Chinese steel plate market

In the week ending December 15, steel plate prices in the Chinese domestic market have mostly indicated upward movement, apart from slight downticks seen in northern areas and also decreases seen in prices of shipbuilding plate, while transaction activity in the market is generally at decent levels, though activity has been slack in the north of the country. Average steel plate prices in China can be viewed in the SteelOrbis price reports section.

During the given week, plate prices in eastern China have seen significant rises due to tight supply as some steelmakers have been carrying out maintenance work. However, plate prices in northeastern and northern China have come under downward pressure due to slack demand in those regions. As for the long-term trend, plate prices in eastern and southern China may undergo corrections as more plate supplies will circulate from northern China. It is expected that steel plate prices in the Chinese domestic market will continue to see a weak trend in northern China, while prices are expected to move on a stronger trend in southern China
