During the week ending August 14, average prices of steel plate in the Chinese domestic market have continued their increasing trend though at a slower pace, while transaction activity in the overall steel plate market has been at low-to-medium levels. Average steel plate prices in China are presented in the table below.
In the first part of the given week, semi-finished steel prices and ferrous metal futures prices in China rose significantly, exerting a positive impact on the domestic steel plate market. However, later in the week the China Iron and Steel Association (CISA) convened a meeting to discuss the rapid increases in steel prices, calling for caution. On August 11, Shanghai Futures Exchange announced that the trading fee for the main rebar futures contracts RB1710 and RB1801 will be adjusted to 5 per 10,000 from 1 per 10,000 effective as of August 15 if anyone both buys and sells rebar on the same day. On August 14, ferrous metals futures prices have decreased, negatively influencing the finished steel spot market. It is thought that steel plate prices in the Chinese domestic market will likely indicate downward corrections in the coming week.
