During the week ending August 22, average prices of common carbon and low alloy medium plate in the Chinese domestic market have continued to indicate an upward trend, though with shipbuilding plate prices remaining stable, while transaction activity in the overall market has been at decent levels. Average steel plate prices in China are presented in the table below.
During the given week, despite some corrections HRC futures prices in China are still moving up, providing support for domestic steel plate prices. Bullish sentiment prevails among players in the domestic finished steel market, with traders in the steel plate market optimistic as regards the future prospects for their market. Meanwhile, China will conduct special inspections to check the progress of capacity cuts in the domestic steel and coal sectors, which will likely limit supply of steel plate in the coming period. At the same time, the current hot weather conditions are exerting a negative impact on demand levels. It is expected that steel plate prices in the Chinese domestic market will likely move sideways in the coming week.
