During the week ending September 18, average prices of common carbon and low alloy medium plate in the Chinese domestic market have moved down, while prices of shipbuilding plate have risen slightly. Transaction activity in the overall steel plate market has been at low-to-medium levels. Average steel plate prices in China are presented in the table below.
During the given week, ferrous metal futures prices in China have decreased significantly, exerting a negative impact on finished steel prices in the spot market. Despite September traditionally being a peak season for activity in the finished steel market, demand has not indicated any significant improvement yet. However, approaching the National Day Holiday (October 1-8), downstream users will likely seek to build up some inventories. It is thought that steel plate prices in the Chinese domestic market will continue their downward trend in the coming week.
