During the week ending August 29, average prices of steel plate in the Chinese domestic market have indicated an upward trend, while transaction activity in the overall market has been at low levels. Average steel plate prices in China are presented in the table below.
During the given week, buyers have mostly maintained a wait-and-see stance in the domestic steel plate market due to higher offer prices, resulting in low levels of transaction activity in the market. Amid increases in domestic slab prices and environmental protection examinations at major Chinese steel producers, traders are generally optimistic as regards the future prospects for the domestic steel plate market. In addition, Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region-based steelmaker Liuzhou Iron and Steel Group halted production as of August 22 and Guangdong-based steel producer Shaoguan Iron and Steel Co., Ltd (SGIS) halted production for ten days as of August 26, both resulting in reduced supplies of steel plate and providing support for steel plate prices. It is expected that steel plate prices in the Chinese domestic market will likely move sideways in the coming week.
