Brazilian slab exports increase at stable prices

Brazil exported 607,000 mt of slabs in July, 8.7 percent more than in June, at an average FOB price of $325/mt, stable from June.

According to the ministry of development, industry and foreign trade, MDIC, the top exporter was ArcelorMittal Tubarao with 285,300 mt, up 50 percent, at an average price increased by six percent to $328/mt FOB.

ThyssenKrupp CSA shipped 234,300 mt, 18 percent more, at an average FOB price four percent lower, $336/mt, of which 214,600 mt to its previously owned rolling plant in Alabama and 19,700 mt to ThyssenKrupp operations in Germany.

Exports of slab by Usiminas declined by 49 percent to 87,400 mt, at an average price reduced by 7.7 percent to $290/mt FOB, while Gerdau Acominas did not export slab in July, against 98,300 mt in June.

Total exports to the US increased by 33.5 percent to 270,800 mt, while shipments to Europe declined by 19 percent to 216,300 mt, and shipments to Asian countries increased by 49 percent to 73,800 mt.

A source from a major exporter told SteelOrbis that the price deals of the slab exported in July were mostly closed on May, adding that the base price for negotiations of slab exports of the basic commercial grades is currently $290/mt, FOB conditions, now stable for one month after a continuous decline since March.
