Export slab tonnages from Brazil were recorded at 385,000mt in October, which reflects an 18 percent decline from levels recorded in September, according to the local ministry of foreign trade, industry and services, MDIC.

The top exporter of slabs was the new player, Companhia Siderurgica do Pecem (CSP) (130,500mt at $322/mt), followed by ThyssenKrupp CSA (121,600mt at $349/mt), ArcelorMittal Tubarao (93,400mt at $357/mt) and Gerdau Acominas (39,400mt at $336/mt), all FOB conditions, with price deals probably closed in August.

The main destinations for Brazilian export slabs were the US (180,300mt at $346/mt), the EU (135,200mt at $345/mt), Asia (40,400mt at $317/mt) and Mexico (29,000mt at $315/mt).

The most recent slab export deals in Brazil were reportedly closed in the range of $350/mt to $360/mt, FOB conditions for the basic commercial grades, against a range of $340/mt to $350/mt one week ago, a local exporter told SteelOrbis.

Indication of an uptrend in price points to the possibility of prices reaching the $370/mt level in the short term, the source said.
