Steel news of the week - Americas

FIBO STEEL rushes to aid of style-conscious men everywhere The FIBO STEEL Collection, which features “jewelry for the contemporary man” will be on display at the MAGIC Show in Las Vegas, the largest apparel and accessories show in the US. According to Miami Steel, FIBO STEEL’s distributor, the steel jewelry is “definitely a must for today’s sophisticated and evolving man.” The Italian-designed, high-quality stainless steel jewelry collection was created by FIBO after 50 years in the gold jewelry business. The company is promoting its product through giant billboards, GQ magazine, and gift bags given to Melissa and Joan Rivers. “FIBO STEEL wants to cultivate an audience of affluent and successful men who are style-conscious,” says Sandro Angiolini of Miami Steel. “FIBO STEEL realizes that the number of these men is growing by the hour, and FIBO is prepared to satisfy their fashion needs.” Katrina to exact heavy toll on construction industry When the time comes to rebuild in the hurricane-ravaged states of Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama, construction expenses are expected to be astronomical. Ken Simonson, chief economist at The Associated General Contractors of America, expects contractors to feel the heavy toll of high petroleum and energy costs, due to their high usage of off-road equipment, freight deliveries and construction vehicles. The steel industry will also feel the burn of soaring energy prices since steel requires such a large amount of energy to manufacture, as do other construction materials like metals and cement. Katrina will cause shortages of construction materials and labor similar to last year’s Florida hurricanes. Simonson predicts the effects of Katrina on the construction industry will be even more pronounced and widespread this time around. Ford and Granite City Works really like each other US Steel’s Granite City Works of has been awarded Ford Motor Company’s prestigious Bulk Materials Q1 quality certification. The award was given because Granite City has excelled in four key areas: capable systems, ongoing performance, continuous improvement and customer satisfaction. “Achieving Ford Q1 certification is not easy,” said Ford Supplier tech engineer Lew, Dimovski at the award acceptance ceremony. “The employees of Granite City Works have demonstrated through hard work and dedication that they can provide the quality and delivery necessary to be recognized as a Q1 supplier.” Granite City Works began the Q1 process in 2002, shipping hot-rolled pickled and oiled blanks to Ford’s Dearborn, Michigan stamping plant. Most of the steel is used as a support member in Ford’s best-selling F-150 pickup truck. EPA cites WCI Steel for clean-air violations The US Environmental Protection Agency Region 5 has cited WCI Steel Inc. for clean-air violations at the company’s iron and steel plant in Warren, Ohio. The EPA claims WCI violated its state operating permit and its permit to prevent deterioration of air quality by failing to control particulate (smoke, ash, dust) emissions at two cast houses at the plant. These violations were discovered during an EPA inspection in March and from information volunteered from the company in June. High concentrations of particulates are dangerous for the elderly, children, and people with heart and lung diseases.
