Stainless steel consumption climbs in US
Data released by Specialty Steel Industry of North America (SSINA) indicates a year-on-year increase in stainless steel consumption in the US. Stainless steel plate consumption surged by 31% to 47'471 tons in the first two months of 2004 when compared with the same period of last year. The increased consumption caused a 17% rise in imports to 8'941 tons. Demand for stainless steel sheet/strip, the industry's dominant product category, also increased by 7% to 281'868 tons in the mentioned period. Stainless steel sheet/strip imports soared by 6% to 54'986, capturing 20% of US market share. Stainless steel bar imports and consumption declined in Jan-Feb 2004 period. Imports dropped by 27% to 9'222 tons while consumption decreased by 10% to 28'301 tons. Stainless steel rod imports also fell by 20% to 5'231 tons. Domestic consumption amounted to 11'255 tons, down by 10%. Total stainless steel consumption which comprises the above product lines reached 373'428 tons in the first two months of 2004, indicating an increase of 7%.Stainless steel consumption climbs in US
