South Africa’s steel sales decrease in May

Based on the figures released by South African Iron and Steel Institute (SAISI), South Africa's domestic steel sales amounted to 1.43 million tons in the first four months of 2004, revealing a 9.7% decrease compared to 1.58 million tons registered in the same period of last year. In the mentioned period, sales of long and flat products decreased by 15.6% and 5.9% to 510'900 tons and 915'800 tons respectively. These figures were 605'600 tons and 973'500 tons respectively in the same period of last year. In May, total sales reached 254'700 tons with a 13.3% drop compared to May 2003. Sales of long and flat products amounted to 73'200 tons and 181'500 tons respectively.
