Capesize (Atlantic and Pacific)

Capesize market last week eased in all areas apart from North Atlantic. Rates in Pacific touched $9 for the beginning of December and for mid December loading dates fixtures were in the mid $8. Fronthaul from Brazil was very quiet as owners kept on flooding that market with ballasters. A fixture for beginning January on the Tubarao/Qingdao trade was reported at a low $19.75. Atlantic, as said, was a bit more supported: quick TransAtlantic rounds with Narvik loading were reported at $20,000 daily. However, even there, owners found themselves with not many alternatives and they had to accept cheaper rates to go East. Period market traded south accordingly: a prompt vessel with delivery Singapore was fixed at $11,500 for 10/18 months.

Panamax (Atlantic and Pacific)

In the Atlantic basin the market turned steady again during the 2nd half of the week. Some TransAtlantic fixtures were done at $10,000 daily encouraged by some spot cargoes. For Fronthaul from US Gulf the cargoes were limited, but rates were still talked at around $14,500 daily + $500,000 ballast bonus. The Pacific market was under pressure due to the decreasing number of cargoes, especially those for N. China candidates. Vessels in S. China were still able to get $8,500 daily for Indonesia round with a little Premium for India redelivery. Rates for NoPac rounds slid down to $7,000 daily for N. China candidates and some charterers started to were willing to discuss vessel on aps delivery basis again. There were some short period fixtures done with rates hovering at low levels: low $7,000 daily for 4/8 months.

Handy (Far East/Pacific)

Supramax timecharter rates grew further for with coal via Indonesia to India. Fancy units with delivery Singapore or South China were regularly fixed during the week at rates between $13/14,000 daily and with spot candidates achieving up to $16,000. This also allowed owners of tonnage coming open East Coast India to perform that trade at firmer rates. A 55,000 tonner was reported at $10,000 daily with delivery dop Haldia. The positive trend was reflected also on the rates agreed for trips back to Far East and on short period which is now in the mid/high $9,000 and showed improvements as well from West Coast America. A fancy unit achieved $9,000 plus $400,000 basis aps delivery North Coast South America and another one was reported at a very interesting $16,500 basis delivery West Coast Cenral Ameica. A few fixtures were available for Handysize, even if a rate of $9,500 daily was reported for a modern 34,000 dwt to perfom a Singapore round voyage via Australia that showed that this size keeps enjoying a very firm market in Pacific waters.

Handy (North Europe/Mediterranean)

Again there were no fixtures available for tonnage loading at BSea ports. The only fixture reported from South Europe was a fancy 55,000 tonner concluded at an unattractive $8,000/d to perform a trip from the East Med to WAfr.. The market in Continent was quite dull as well: a 50,000 tonner was booked at just $8,250/d to perfrom a trip to Turkey and another Supramax was rumored fixed at around $11,000/d for a trip from North Europe to Middle East.

Handy (USA/N.Atlantic/Lakes/S.America)

Decent demand for Supramax tonnage from USG to Spore/Japan range kept timecharter rates in the region of $17,000/17,500 daily and at the end of the week MV Almyvros was said to be fixed on subs at a good $18,500/d with delivery EC Mexico to perform a long trip via USG to Persian Gulf/India range. Handymax and Supramax TransAtlantic trip rates remained in the $11,750/12,000/d region. A 55,000 tonner was agreed at $10,000/d with dely NCSAm for 2 laden legs, redely USEC, but with an option for redelivery full Atlantic/Med that was fixed at only $11,000/d. Smaller Handies showed to benefit from a firmer maket both for loading out of Usec and South America, where interests for larger units was marginal.

Handy (Indian Ocean/South Africa)

No concluded business was reported out of Persian Gulf/India area, however some fixtures were concluded on confidential basis with owners said to compete hard with each other in order to secure an employment. A fancy 55,000 tonner with dely South Africa was fixed at an unattractive $8,500 plus $290,000 bb to perform a trip to Far East however this route is now positioning business for owners. Another Supra, 57,000 dwt, was done with dely EC India to perform 2/3 laden legs with redelivery Spore/Jpn range, on a minimum 50 days duration.
