MMC reports 2003 results

Mitsubishi Motors Corporation (MMC) announced production, sales and export results for 2003. Global production amounted to 1.58 million units in 2003, down by 5.7% compared to 2002. Production in Japan for the 2003 decreased by 3.4% compared to 749'371 units recorded in 2002. The decline in domestic production is attributed to the low export volumes to North America. However, MMC's sales in Japan increased by 3.4% to 367'040 units in 2003. This figure indicates the first rise recorded in domestic sales since 1995. MMC also sold 145'235 vehicles in China with an increase of 106%. It is reported that MMC's alliance with DaimlerChrysler started to show positive results in China. Total exports were down by 6.2% to 389'947 units in 2003. Exports to Asia amounted to 52'485 units, to North America 116'418 units and to Europe 97'301 units.
