Capesize (Atlantic and Pacific)

Capesize market kept its negative trend. The standard route from Tubarao to Qingdao remained stable during the course of the week at $5.5/mt and also trades from West Australia to Qingdao were still paid around $2.90-95/mt. In the Atlantic basin charterers managed to shave some more cents from charter rates fixing cargoes from Bolivar to Rotterdam from high $3/mt on Monday to low $3/mt by the closing of the week. Period rates remained very much in the doldrums as modern tonnage open prompt China was fixed for 11/14 months timecharter in the low $5,000/d. General rates still at low levels with TCE return in most of the cases very closed to zero or just marginally positive.

Panamax (Atlantic and Pacific)

The rates seen during last week remained on the low side with little changes despite reasonable activity towards the end of the week. An 81,000 dwt was reported fixed for a trip from ECSAm to F East at $6,000/d + $100,000 bb bss aps ECSAm and a smaller 74,000 dwt was fixed at $2,500/d bss retro Kakinada 24th Dec for a fronthaul via ECSAm while owners that will consider trip Atlantic will be looking at levels close to high $5,000/d bss aps for a 75,000 dwt. Windrose fixed a 73,000 dwt at $6,500/d bss aps for trip to Med and redely Egypt Med. In USG charterers have been rating 75,000 dwt vessels around $7,750/d + $75,000 bb for trip to F East while, for vessels ballasting from Med, an 82,000 dwt was fixed at $6,000/d bss Gibraltar for trip to Cont. In Cont a 77,000 dwt fixed by Dreyfus basis Montoir for a trip via Murmansk to China at just $6,300/d. In F East freight levels still on the low side with 74,000 dwt vessels fixed at $2,500/d + $28,000 bb for tct basis Indo to S Korea, and similar levels can also be seen for Indo loading to full India redely. An 81,000 dwt, was fixed a trip bss aps EC Australia to EC India at $4,000/d + $50,000 bb while NoPac was reported around still seeing levels close to $4,000/d + $100,000 bb bss aps with a nice 76,000 dwt dely aps NoPac redely China agreed at $3,700/d + $80,000 bb. For one year period owners will still be looking at below $5,000/d bss dop F East as seen on a 75,000 dwt which fixed $4,600/d bss asp Rizhao for 11-14 mon.

Handy (Far East/Pacific)

Supramax timecharter levels for spot trading showed a strong decrease of about 10% through the last week. On the inter SE Asia trade an Ultramax was fixed at $4,200/d basis dely aps Indo loading port and redely Thailand, a 56,000 size standard type got $2,350/d dely Spore to perform a very similar trip. Coal exports from this area to India were very limited, while the same commodity was carried into Philippine where an Ultramax was fixed basis dely aps Indo at only $3,000/d. More active was the trade from N China to India, but only in cargo volumes, where three 57,000 dwt were reported done all at $4,200/d to carry steels to WC India. From same loading area the same commodity was fixed on a 53,000 size for a long duration trip to Indo with a rate of $2,750/d for the 1st 40 days and $4,000/d for the balance. Split rate was also done on backhaul where another unfancy Supramax dely at C China got $2,300/d for the 1st 70 days and $5,200/d for the balance. Bss loading from Aus a fancy 58,000 dwt got $5,250/d basis dely Spore for a trip via Aus to MEG. With same dely a 36,000 size fixed $3,750/d via Aus to F East and a 28,000 dwt was done at $5,250/d dely aps Aus for a trip to CIS Pacific.

Handy (North Europe/Mediterranean)

Rates were seen getting weaker for spot business loading ex Europe, a little more from N Europe compared to voyages loading out of the B Sea. A nice 58,000 dwt was fixed for a trip with scrap from Cont to Turkish Med at $5,000/d meanwhile an Ultramax with delivery UK, got $4,500/d for a trip to W Africa and a 57,000 dwt did a trip from the lower Baltic to R Sea at $4,500/d basis redely at Port Said. Fronthaul with delivery inside the B Sea showed a 55,000 dwt done at $ 7,500/d to Spore/Japan range, afterwards a 58,000 dwt delivering passing Canakkale got $6,000/d for a similar trip.

Handy (USA/N.Atlantic/Lakes/S.America)

Rates in these waters remained quite low, but, at least, at levels similar to the last done. A 56,700 dwt delivering Mississippi entrance got $8,700/d for a trip to Spore/Japan range and a similar type was fixed at $8,000/d for a trip to China. An Ultramax was taken at $9,000/d aps Atlantic Colombia to carry coal to Chile, while on TransAtlantic routes a 58,000 dwt got $7,800/d from Venezuela to E Med and another one was agreed at $7,250/d from USG to N Europe. Handysizes trading from this area suffered from the negative trend, especially for the Atlantic business where a 30,000 dwt was reported fixed for a quick trip from Jamaica to Cont at just $3,750/d. Better was the $7,500/d agreed for a 34,000 dwt performing a trip from USG to Pacific Colombia. Significantly fewer fixtures were reported concluded basis loading from S America and the respective Baltic index for this area at the end of the week was lower both for TransAtlantic and fronthaul spot business. A 52,500 dwt was fixed at $6,250/d with dely Recalada and redely Skaw/Passero, still basis dely Brazil a similar size did $6,500/d plus $65,000 bb for a trip into Spore/Japan range.

Handy (Indian Ocean/South Africa)

A number of concluded deals from this area showed a still very low market for Supramax owners, even more for longer trips taking the tonnage out of the MEG waters. A 57,000 dwt non-eco type accepted for a trip from WC India to China only $1,925/d, the MEG/India trade showed a 55,000 size fixing $4,200/d to EC India followed by a small Ultramax doing same trip at $3,500/d. Inter MEG trades showed another 57,000 size done at $3,750/d while a nicer 58,000 dwt was fixed at $3,150/d from West to EC India.
