India’s steel exports rise by 31.5%

Due to Chinese demand, India's exports of iron and steel rose by 31.5% to $1.9 billion in April-January 2003/04 fiscal year against $1.4 billion in the corresponding period of the previous fiscal. Primary and semi-finished iron and steel exports surged by 32.7% to $1.6 billion in the mentioned period. Iron and steel bar exports amounted to $239.04 million, indicating a rise of 24.3%. Ferro alloys registered a rise of 12.8% and reached $49.3 million during the same period from $43.7 million in 2002/03 fiscal year. Imports of iron and steel also soared by 52.5% to $1.2 billion in April-January 2003/04 fiscal from $783.4 million during the same period in 2002/03.
