Increases in steel prices affect the construction sector

Unprecedented increases in steel prices are affecting architects, contractors and builders in North America who are looking for solutions that involve using less steel. Global steel and scrap prices have jumped up in recent weeks. The analysts attribute price increases the demand and consumption of steel in China. US Steel Manufacturers Association officials pointed out that the purchases made by China and South Korea, accounted for half all US exports. They also stated that the construction sector, a mainstay of the US economy, suffered from sharply increased steel prices. Architectural firms released a report last month. Based on the report, the high demand and prices for steel will impact the project schedules negatively. Accordingly, as demand increases, some projects may face delays in receiving needed materials. When we look at the contractors' side, we see that the significant increases in steel prices are affecting everything and steel suppliers won't guarantee prices for more than a week. Architects worry about getting projects because of additional hikes in steel prices. The idea of further price increases is also disturbing contractors. The increase in steel prices started to affect the masonry industry, too. The price increases in reinforcing components, stainless steel and reinforcing bar for structural design will have an impact on wall costs. However, there is no adequate information yet of how much the impact will be.
