Global crude steel output up by 8.4% in January
Based on the data released by International Iron and Steel Institute (IISI), global crude steel production amounted to 81.2 million mts in January, up by 8.4% compared to January 2003. China produced 19.4 million mts of crude steel in January with an increase of 25.5% compared to corresponding period in 2003. The UK, Spain and France have reported strong increases in crude steel production in January. Production in the UK increased to 1.2 million mts, up by 21.7% compared to January 2003. Production in Spain reached 1.3 million mts, up by 12.1% while France produced 1.8 million mts of crude steel, up by 9%. Asian crude steel production reached 37 million mts in January. This figure was 13% higher than January 2003. Japan was the second largest producer in this region with total production of 9.3 million mts in January. CIS produced 9.2 million mts of crude steel in January. Russian crude steel production increased by 3.3% to 5.3 million mts in January.
