Capesize (Atlantic and Pacific)
Pacific market was relatively stable in the mid $7 range; Far Eastern holidays only partially affected the activity. In Atlantic a strike at Colombian coal mines affected the production reducing activity at ports. Atlantic Round was fixed at $7,750/d for a Colombia Round with delivery Amsterdam. The number of cargoes to perform Fronthaul was limited and saw enquires for Baltimore to South Korea fixing around
low $22,000/d with a 180,000 tonner open Immingham.
Panamax (Atlantic and Pacific)
The Atlantic market was very hot thanks to a number of spot/prompt cargoes from Baltic. The rate for a Baltic round breaking IWL was talked at close to $10,000 daily and normal TransAtlantic trip was done at $8,000 daily. Fronthaul trip from US Gulf was done at $14,500 daily + 450,000 ballast bonus and trip from South America was talked bit lower. Encouraged by the Atlantic market, the Pacific side was also firmer, with some Indonesia/China trip fixtures being done at $8,000 daily for modern tonnage in S. China. Also candidates in N. China could secure high rates with some vessels in Korea being fixed at $7,000 daily for NoPac round. Short period was active as well at rates talked at $7,750 daily for 4/6 months delivery China.
Handy (Far East/Pacific)
The chartering activity slowed down considerably since most of the operators got rid of their requirements before the start of holidays. With a long tonnage list still available rates collapsed, in particular for North China Round via SE Asia where a 56,000 tonner was fixed at only $4,000/d and for long duration backhaul business from West Coast Canada where a fancy 58,000 dwt was fixed basis dely N. China at only $2,750/d for 60 days and $7,000/d for the balance of the trip. Coal from SE Asia to India managed to hold better with another fancy 58,000 dwt agreeing for short period $8,500/d.
Handy (North Europe/Mediterranean)
Improved activity to load Handy sized grains from N. Europe lead to improved fixture $18.50/mt agreed on a voyage basis from North France to Algeria and another one units fixed at $8,000/d to perform on timecharter basis bulk wheat from the same load area to WAfr. From Med/Bsea two 56,000 tonners where booked at ony $7,000/d to load steels from BSea and cement from Spain to NAfr. Weaker market allowed other charterers to book another 56,000 tonner for short period at $10,000/d and a 28,000 dwt at $6,650 for one year.
Handy (USA/N.Atlantic/Lakes/S.America)
A quiet start didn't prevent USG market to remain firm. A trip to FarEast was agreed at $19,500/d and a NCSA to WCSA was fixed at $20,750/d on a sister vessel. The market firmed also for smaller Handies on TA trips. Much worst the market in S America with many ballasters available ppt. The sole fxt reported was a 56,000 dwt fixed at $11,250/d + $180,000 bb basis aps S America, not exiting but better than other rumored fixtures since discharge is Bangladesh.
Handy (Indian Ocean/South Africa)
No fresh news available this week. Big money had to be agreed to fix a 57,000 tonner with aggregates from Persian Gulf to India just because afterwards employments will either be very low or involve the need of a long ballast to S America. A large 61,000 dwt agreed $8,500/d for a trip to the Cont basis aps S Africa, even if not exciting this shows some improvement.
