Capesize (Atlantic and Pacific)

The Capesize market remained steady and did not show any sign of upwards trend. In Pacific, the Waustralia to China route settled around the high $7/mt, while more activity was noticed out of EAustralia with time charter rates at around $10,000/d. Cargoes out of Saldanha Bay to Qingdao were fixed mid $13/mt for September laycan. Ballasters heading to Brazil had to wait several days before finding an employment and Tubarao/Qingdao route did not really move from mid/high $18/mt level. The Atlantic market followed a similar pattern: a Tubarao /Rotterdam cargo was fixed on voyage basis at an equivalent of around $1,000/d. TC rates were considerably higher as fancy vessels are fixed at around $6 500/7 000/d for TA RV basis full loading options Finally period market was slightly more active than last week: $19,000/d were paid for about one year delivery mid-August.

Panamax (Atlantic and Pacific)

The Panamax market started and remained very quiet all along last week, rates were unchanged. The Atlantic market was quiet with some positive expectations for Cont positions in the near future and some interesting fixtures for cargoes ex BSea, there were rumors of a fixture at over $15,000/d for F East redely. In USG all interests were only for forward cargoes. Business from ECSAm to the East was limited and rates remained at around $12,5/13,000/d + $250/300,000 bb. Not much happened in the Pacific market with rates still in the doldrums. Fixtures were reported as follows: for Australia RV redely China around $5/5,500 + $200/250,000 bb, Indonesia RVs were fixed at around $5,000/d + $50,000. Period was around $8,500/9,000/d for 1 year duration and around $8,000 for shorter durations.

Handy (Far East/Pacific)

The market was again quite flat for Supramax. Activity was limited again to business loading out of SE Asia for discharge either in F East or in the Indian sub-Cont. Due to the on-going surplus of tonnage available in the area there was a good amount of fixtures reported, generally at unattractive levels. The 56,600 dwt not fancy ‘dolphin types' were reported fixed at around $7,000/d basis delivery Spore to move coal cargoes. A slightly smaller unit, similar type, agreed a very low $5,000/d for the same trade approaching the end of the week. The same figure was paid to a 55,000 dwt more efficient type in exchange of a better redelivery to Thailand. A ‘tess 52' agreed $ 7,500/d to end up , p in the unattractive MEG area with a cargo of fertilizers, while fancy 55,000 dwt did a coal trip to EC India at a better $8,500/d. A Supramax sized nickel ore cargo ex Philippines to China managed to fix at $5,500/d on a 54,800 dwt basis dely Spore.

Handy (North Europe/Mediterranean)

A large fresh flow of cargoes loading out of the BSea quickly showed an improved $11,500/d agreed for a 55,000 dwt delivering at Cannakkale for a trip to the F East. This was immediately followed by a firmer $12,500/d paid to a very similar type for a 2 to 4 months employment with redelivery ww. From the same area a 57,000 non ecotype got $10,250 for a 12 months duration commitment, but afterwards she failed on subjects. In E Med a 16 years old Handymax got a good $8,250/d for a trip to W Med and a similar unit got only $7,000/d for a trip ex BSea to SAfr, but the lower figure was mostly due to the vessel dely in the E Med. No fixtures were reported from N Europe where the market was again very slow with both Handy and Supramax rumoured at around $8,000/d for trips to Med.

Handy (USA/N.Atlantic/Lakes/S.America)

Owners enjoyed a steady market trend from the USG where Supramax were said to be worth around $11,500/12,000/d for trips to the F East and $9,500/10,000/d for European destinations. Handysize were active as well: a trip to the E Med was done at $8,500/d. A 35,000 dwt got $6,500/d for a quick trip with coal redely USG. A 28,000 dwt got only $8,250 basis dely USG to perform 2 laden legs with redely F East. More fixtures were reported at less attractive rates from ECSAm. A 55,000 dwt agreed at $11,500/d + $150,000 bb for a trip to RSea and a similar type got $11,000/d plus $130,000 to go F East. From the same loading area a 56,000 dwt was fixed at $12,000/d WCSAm and a 49,000 dwt got a better $9,500/d for a short trip to remain in the area. Smaller Handies were fixed to Med at rates in the region of mid $7 to low $8,000/d. A 38,000 dwt got $6,550/d for a trip to the Adriatic Sea.

Handy (Indian Ocean/South Africa)

The end of the festivities didn't change the amount of demand from the area. The negative trend was strengthened by the monsoon season affecting several WC Indian ports. No fixtures were reported concluded. A Supramax was rumoured at $8,000/d plus $140,000 bb basis delivery aps SAfr to carry minerals to F East and another one got somewhere around mid $3,000/d to do a trip from MEG to EC India, both were said to have failed on subjects.
