In 2009 Heilongjiang Province-based Chinese steel producer Xilin Iron and Steel Group made savings of RMB 55.87 million ($8.19 million), due to its increased emphasis on recycling, greater efficiency and cost reduction, exceeding its target of RMB 40 million.
In 2009, at its main site the steelmaker's comprehensive energy consumption was 611.3 kg of standard coal per metric ton of steel produced, down 2.4 kg/mt year on year. Water consumption per metric ton of steel produced was 6 mt, down 5.95 mt year on year. Recycled steam from 120-mt converters amounted to 87,000 mt, while recovery of basic oxygen furnace gas (LDG) came to 1,093 m3. The total power generated via recycling was 13,463 kWh. Meanwhile, the qualification rate of billets produced reached 99.928 percent.
