The relevant Chinese authority has recently commented that wire rod will probably be the first steel variety to be traded on the futures exchange and that official trading will commence immediately after the Chinese New Year.

Currently, there are more than 10 e-platforms for steel futures trading in China, with 20 percent of the price placed as a deposit. These trading activities involve wire rod, rebar, HRC, CRC, stainless steel, and some other steel varieties. The daily trading volume of major contracts is around 50,000-400,000 mt, having registered a peak of one million mt per day.
