Weekly US raw steel production edges up year-over-year

According to a report released by the American Iron and Steel Institute, in the week ending September 21, US domestic raw steel production was 1,877,000 net tons, a 7.2 percent increase from the 1,751,000 net tons produced in the same week last year and a 1.8 percent increase compared to week ending September 14.  The capability utilization rate for the week was 78.3 percent, compared to 70.4 percent in 2012. However, production for the week ending September 14 is down 1.5 percent from the previous week (ending September 7, 2013) when production was 1,872,000 net tons.

Adjusted year-to-date production through September 21, 2013 was 70,321,000 net tons, at a capability utilization rate of 77.2 percent. That is a 3.6 percent decrease from the 72,893,000 net tons during the same period last year, when the capability utilization rate was 77.0 percent.
