Sources in Vietnam have told SteelOrbis that the country's import duty on finished steel is proposed to be increased to 25 percent from its current level of eight percent.

If such a proposal is accepted, local Vietnamese producers will be protected from import competition amidst the slipping steel prices and weak demand globally. Besides, the high stock levels of billet and rebar in the country are reported to be sufficient to last until the end of the current year.
