Venezuela’s Sidor not producing steel as electricity concerns remain

Venezuelan state-run steelmaker Sidor hasn’t produced steel since January, as the producer has been affected by the lack of feedstock and a crisis hitting the nation’s electric system.

The company wasn’t immediately available to comment the issue on Monday, but reports from local media said slab and billet production remain halted.

In March this year, Sidor told SteelOrbis that it was waiting for a government decree that could allow it restart operations.

Talking to Reuters, a union leader said steel output at Sidor has been halted due to “bad management.”

A media report in Spanish said Sidor’s output in Q1 has reached some 37,927 mt, about 11 percent of what the company has officially planned for the period. The figures, however, aren’t official.

Despite the halt in slab and billet output, operations at the company’s pellet plant resumed this past weekend.
