The Venezuelan government has established a working group to discuss how the country’s state-owned companies linked to the nation’s ministry of basic industries can reduce their reliance on imports.

According to government officials, the topic was discussed with some of the country’s key industries, including the local iron and steel sectors, as well as other industrial segments. HBI producers Comsigua and Briquetera de Venezuela were some of the companies that joined the first meeting.

Meanwhile, Venezuelan state-owned steelmaker Sidor waits for a new president to be appointed, as its former leader, Noguera Pietri, left the company to run for governor.

According to local media, Pietri is running for governor of the state of Bolivar as part of the United Socialist Party of Venezuela (PSUV) in an election scheduled for October.
