Brazil miner Vale has resumed expansion works at its Estrada de Ferro Carajas (EFC) rail track, following a recent suspension of the project by a Brazilian court.

According to Vale, the expansion of the railroad was partially suspended since July 9, but works have resumed on July 27, after a court lifted the suspension.

The halt in Vale’s railroad expansion occurred between the 274 and the 326 km of the rail track, near the Indian community of the Caru.

The court imposed the halt in the expansion works at Vale’s EFC after the nation’s public ministry (MPF/MA), a body of public prosecutors, filed a public civil suit saying the project was causing negative impacts to an a local Indian community.

The expansion of the EFC railroad is seen by Vale as an important step in the company’s plans in increasing its iron ore output.
