Brazil-based newspaper Valor Economico reported Monday that Vale SA wants government aid for a proposed steel mill in Brazil's northern Para state.

Vale wants infrastructure, including a waterway, to be built at the Vila do Conde port in Brazil before the 2.5 million ton/year flat-rolled steel mill--Acos Laminados do Para (Alpa)--project can be underway. The project is still under evaluation by Vale's board, but with market demand so minimal where the proposed mill will be built, Vale insists that a waterway would be necessary to ship the steel.
