US iron ore output down 7.4 percent in May from April

US iron ore production in May this year amounted to 3.62 million mt, decreasing by 7.4 percent compared to April and down 23.6 percent year on year, according to figures from the Mineral Industry Survey released by the US Geological Survey (USGS). Meanwhile, US iron ore shipments in May this year totaled 5.38 million mt, increasing by 49.4 percent compared to the previous month and down by 9.86 percent compared to May 2014. 
 
In the first five months of this year, US iron ore production totaled 20.5 million mt, compared to 20.4 million mt registered in the January-May period of 2014, while US iron ore shipments amounted to 12.5 million mt, decreasing by 3.8 percent year on year.
