US TEU imports rise 9 percent May

Minneapolis, Minnesota-based Zepol Corporation reported Tuesday that total US import shipment volume for May, measured in TEUs, rose 9.27 percent from April and 8.76 percent compared to the same period a year ago. The total number of shipments was up as well, rising 9.35 percent over April and 9 percent over May 2010.
Shipments from Asian ports in May were up about 12 percent in April, due to heavy imports coming from China. Imports from Japan fell 2.43 percent in May, and Central America recorded a shipment decrease of almost 5 percent. Shipments from European ports were up 7 percent. 

TEU shipments into California rose by 13 percent in May, with the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach registering a 14.18 and 11.34 percent increase in shipments, respectively.
