Local reports Monday indicated that US Steel is planning to lay off 175 non-union employees at the company’s Hamilton and Lake Erie works.

In a letter to employees, Mike McQuade, president of US Steel’s Canadian business, explained the decision is being made as part of a global effort to streamline the steelmaking business and cut administrative costs.

However, US Steel spokesperson Trevor Harris said the latest layoffs are "not directly related" to last year's decision to permanently end steelmaking operations in Hamilton--that announcement indicated only 40 or so non-union jobs would be affected.
