According to media reports, US Steel has agreed to resolve Clean Air Act litigation initiated in 2012 by the United States along with Indiana, Illinois and Michigan, by undertaking measures to reduce pollution at its steel mills in Gary, Indiana; Ecorse, Michigan; and Granite City, Illinois.
As part of the agreement, US Steel will also undertake supplemental environmental projects totaling $1.9 million. The projects, with the purpose of protecting human health and the environment in the communities affected by US Steel's pollution, include a project to remove lighting fixtures containing toxic chemicals in public schools. US Steel will also spend $800,000 for an environmentally beneficial project to remove contaminated transformers at its Gary and Ecorse facilities and pay a $2.2 million civil penalty.
Other projects include: repairing a large opening in a metal shell that surrounds a blast furnace at the Gary Works plant; and maintaining the effective operation of pollution control equipment at the company’s Granite City Works facility.
